Ranchi, November 29, 2024: Hemant Soren took the oath as the 14th Chief Minister of Jharkhand on Thursday at the historic Morhabadi Ground in Ranchi. This marks his fourth term, setting a new record in the history of the state. On this occasion, Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan administered the oath of office and secrecy to Soren.
Several prominent opposition leaders were present at Hemant Soren’s oath-taking ceremony. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, and Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav, among others, were in Ranchi to congratulate Soren on his fourth term.
The Morhabadi Ground was painted in the colors of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) during the oath-taking ceremony. Soren’s father Shibu Soren, along with other family members, also attended the event, and opposition leaders joined in to extend their best wishes to him on this historic occasion.
Hemant Soren Sets a New Record
Hemant Soren has become the first Chief Minister of Jharkhand to take the oath for the fourth time. Prior to him, the record for the longest tenure as Chief Minister was held by Arjun Munda, who served for 5 years and 307 days. Hemant Soren is expected to break this record by December 17, 2024, as he has already served for 5 years and 288 days as Chief Minister.
Historically, Hemant Soren’s father, Shibu Soren, served as Chief Minister three times but never for more than five years in total. In contrast, Hemant Soren’s tenure is set to surpass that of his father and other predecessors.
A Look at Jharkhand’s Chief Ministerial History
Babulal Marandi was the first Chief Minister of Jharkhand, serving for 2 years and 123 days. After him, Arjun Munda and Shibu Soren served in various terms, with some of them holding office for less than a year. Notably, despite serving as Chief Minister three times, Shibu Soren’s total tenure did not even reach one year.
Hemant Soren, who took office on November 28, will surpass Arjun Munda’s record of 5 years and 307 days by December 17, making him the longest-serving Chief Minister of Jharkhand. This achievement will establish him as a significant political figure and underscore his stable leadership in the state’s history.
The oath-taking ceremony not only marked a new chapter for Hemant Soren but also signified the beginning of a new political era for the entire state of Jharkhand.
